    Thumbs up

As we've discussed many times before, I have problems with the media. I do believe they are a necessary evil. But....

And yet, as we've also discussed previously, I believe the MRC has gotten away from its original purpose, and instead has turned into a Brent Bozell yapfest. (and I have problems with Brent since he hates Howard and Lewis Black, who are two of my guys).

Well anyway, the MRC just came out with its annual awards for 2007. There were five categories, of three nominees each.

    These are the 15 nominees:

    a newswire
Michael Moore (interviewed by Chris Matthews)
    Katie Couric (on CBS news)

    Bill Maher (HBO)
    Rosie O'Donnell (The View)
    Bruce Springsteen (on "Today")

    Keith Olbermann (Countdown)
    Matt Lauer (Today)
    Geraldo Rivera (Fox News)

    Chris Matthews (on "Tonight Show")
    Chris Matthews (moderating a debate)
    David Wright (ABC News)

    Chris Matthews (Hardball)
    Cynthia McFadden (Nightline)
    Terry Moran (Nightline)

By my count, four right away can be dismissed since they are celebrities who are spouting off (Michael Moore, Bill Maher, Rosie and The Boss).

Of the remaining 11, I can only see 5 (the newswire story, Katie Couric, David Wright, Cynthia McFadden and Terry Moran)that reflect "news." Maybe Matt Lauer is the "news" guy for the Today show, but again, it's the Today show, it's not really supposed to be "news."

The rest....Keith Olberman, Chris Matthews, etc., those shows are op-ed in nature. They may talk about the news, but they are talking heads. They should be watched for their entertainment value, not as a news source. Even Chris Matthews at the Presidential Debate...I mean, by defition, a debate is a politico-suck-up-whore-fest, not a medium for conveying "news."

I thought Bernard Goldberg's book hit a lot of nails right on the head. But the things he talked about in his book....that's not what this is. The whole premise of the MRC was to expose "bias" in news reporting. It's not "bias" to hear Bill Maher go off on something.

And in the old days, when all you had were the three major networks, I absolutely believe that the slant was definitely to one side.

But now, I see Ann Coulter on regularly, Michelle Malkin, Laura Ingraham, Cal Thomas, Hannity, O'Reily...I mean, you can pretty much find a program to fit most any political tastes.

I guess I'm "biased" against Brent because he's against Howard. Fine, I admit that. But I just listed for you 15 nominees, of which no more than 1/3 are actually pertaining to news reporting.
